So after many years of deliberation I have finally decided that I want to get into playing 40k. I have read a lot of novels, played a lot of the games, and consider myself a Warhammer buff, but never have I had the time to collect and play an army.

I have a few space marine models, stuff that I put together for display. I would never collect an army though cause Space Marines just do not interest me as much as the Imperial Guard. 8-)

So my plea for help has come, if anyone in the area would be willing to help me put together a list for an Imperial Guard Regiment. I already have the fluff fleshed out (quite extensively I might add) and just need to get down to seeing how legal/playable my army will turn out to be.

In a nutshell it is an infantry division with limited vehicle support. It will use regular cadian patterned troops, but have irregular elite units (Using Vostroyan models) to represent the varied culture of the planet they come from.

In short, it will be a hard mode guard army, but I want to see what I can do without adding tons of tanks and what not for it to be playable in a small game (like 1000-1500 points)

I also have a few special characters I could use help with. Mainly just picking what character traits they can take over so I don't get too much flak from other players.

Anywho, I work as a computer tech, so I am pretty busy during the week, but I will be available for the weekends. If anyone would like to help I would appreciate it, who knows I might even reward you for your efforts :D

Ok frist round of tips for foot infantry

Im assuming you might wanna use arty still if thats the case pick up a pair of manticors cause they will do wonders

Now standard Inf I would go 10 gaurds men with a lascannon then I would do 2 platoons of around 30 running a lascannon on each squad and have them blobbed up

the 2 PLatoon command squads are really good for Valkryes or Transports but if thats not your fancy they can also just do a mortor team or and autocannon well

that will net you 60 men in 2 blobs with 2 units use support now here is the trick with foot guard

Heavy Weapons Teams !!!!!

its expensive but having autocannons smash into is not even funny
and very guard esk

so around 5 Heavy Weapons Teams with Autocannons is pratically a much for any foot gaurd player

This projection is also taking into account that your not a fan of troop transports

if you are I will get you better advice

I really did have a whole heavy weapons team planned out! Promise.

I was thinking 2 Mortar squads, 2 Autocannon Squads, 1 Lascannon squad, plus some mixed in with the platoons themselves.

I really dont care much for transports, I am a flootsloggin' kind of guy.

I will look into a few manticores as well.

I do want to make damn sure I use command squads. I plan on buying a couple so I can throw them in there when I need them. Command squads mixed with Commissars should make for some pretty effective infantry.

Footslogging infantry is NOT the way to go. I tried it for two games with my space marines when I was starting out, then I turned around and started buying drop pods and speeders.

Two-thirds of the games you are going to play will involve objectives, and IG have enough problems claiming objectives as it is. The other third of the time you will be playing kill-points and each squad of that infantry platoon counts as a kill point, and each squad of that infantry platoon isn't that hard to take out with a couple of template weapons. Footslogging infantry has a really hard time getting to the objectives in time when under fire; and they (especially IG with T3 and a 5+ save) make for really squishy targets.

I would recommend that you include some stormtroopers. I get made fun of because I live by them; but they can infiltrate or deepstrike, they get 2 attacks (3 on the charge), and they can carry two special weapons. A pair of deep-striking meltaguns that get to re-roll their scatter can really help take the heat off of your line infantry. Also, the stormtroopers' weapons are AP3, causing harder targets (like SM) to give up their save.

Chimera's are only 55 pts. Valkyries are great mobile platforms for close air support and are only 130 points (TAKE THE MULTI-ROCKETS). That being said, I would second the suggestion that you take some type of artillery as a heavy support option; Manticores and Griffons are both really fun. Be careful with mortars though, they are guess-range weapons...

Yeah, but I don't really care if it will be hard. Sure I will lose some games, but the games I win will be epic!

As the proud, if frequently defeated commander of a massive guard gunline, I can offer my advice. (which should be very helpful, provided you do the exact opposite)

Sure, Thompkins can give you advice if you want to "win"; but if pulling your hair out while your men fail every possible armor save, or blow themselves up with plasma guns is more your style, then I'm the man you want.

My normal guard lists for a 2000 point game includes almost 100 infantry. I only have 3 tanks in my collection, and the entire thing is just shy of 4000 points.

My recommendations:
Sentinels, at least two, with plasma cannons. They're the only heavy weapon your infantry can't have, and they make a mockery of terminator armor.
An Executioner tank. You really ought to have an executioner and a russ, or demolisher, but if you only have one, then the executioner is rediculous. five plasma cannon shots, and a lascannon to add insult to injury. it is, in fact the most expensive model in the codex, but man, does it kill everything. Well except other heavy tanks, but you could always buy a hunterkiller, or let your lascannon teams deal with armor.
Mortars are weakish. Heavy bolters are better against anyone a mortar would work against. (nids, orks.... nids.) Mortars are useless against power armor, but a lascannon can insta-kill a chapter master.
Ogryns. Sure, they may suck, and they may cost a fortune in points, but... I can't think of a way to end that sentence. I try to always field them, and it always bites me in the butt. Although once, they killed a necron lord, and once two assault terminators. Usually they just die, but it takes an insane amount of firepower to kill them.
Since you wont have transports, grenade launchers are key for squads who you intend to advance. (it happens, sometimes)
The most important piece of advice with a gunline sounds really stupid, but it actually works. If there is an enemy unit within twelve inches of your line, charge it with two squads. They probably wont finish butchering your units until their assault phase, leaving them in rapid fire range of the rest of your guns. Also, sometimes, not often, but sometimes, they win.
Sorry about the novel, but every other guard player I know is a treadhead. Glad to see there's another guard player with no sense!
